I don't sleep well. The hostel doesn't have heating so I need to keep getting out of bed to put more clothes on.
30 minutes outside Lake Taupo is the Hidden Valley and Orakei Korako Cave and Thermal Park, a much overlooked tourist attraction and a secret wonderland. The reason it doesn't receive as many visitors as other thermal parks is that it's not that easy to get to unless you have a car or book the shuttle bus from Taupo.
I'm only passenger on the Hotbus. The chatty driver tells me how New Zealand is trading in forestry for farming, currently a more profitable industry, and cutting down all its trees. This depresses me. The drive out to the Hidden Valley through green volcanic landscapes is spectacular. Today is the first blue sky day I've seen for a while but with it comes an icy frost.
