Ice hiking, Perito Moreno Glacier

Before we´re led on our hike (they call it ´mini-trekking`), we´re given brief instructions on how to walk in crampons i.e. like a penguin uphill and feet straight downhill, but feet always together or you´re likely to get your crampons jammed and go flying.

The ice is like bubbly sugar and I´m excited about being able to walk sideways up ice ridges, spiderman style. Walking up and down the undulating ice peaks that extend for miles feels like being in the middle of a giant meringue pudding. We walk for an hour and a half until large crevasses start to appear and the ice becomes unstable.

It´s a different world on the glacier with rivers, valleys, caves and deep blue drain holes, all carved by the ice.
