Perito Moreno Glacier, Argentina

After a morning wrangling in the chaotic post office in El Calafate where I´m convinced my package will never make it home, I´m off to see the Perito Moreno Glacier, one of only two (Pio XI is the other) glaciers in the world that isn´t retreating.

It´s a stunning glacier, perfectly shaped if that´s possible, wedged between two relatively high mountain ridges which gives it an even more dramatic appearance. There are a myriad of walkways and balconies to view the glacier from various angles. The only thing to spoil the view is the coach loads of tourists arriving every couple of minutes, making it difficult to have a quiet moment to reflect on its beauty.

Despite the rabble of the crowds, every few minutes a gunshot-like noise fills the air. It´s the sound of glacier chunks breaking off although you can´t always see it happening. This afternoon I have signed up for ice hiking on the glacier.
