León, Nicaragua

León is two buses away from Granada. For over two centuries León was the capital of Nicaragua and is today the country's second largest city and a centre for university and cultural life. I don't fall in love with it as I did with Granada. Although similar with cobbled streets, pretty churches and coloured houses, it's just not as beautiful.

León has been the most politically progessive of Nicaraguan city's when during the revolution the whole town fought against the Somoza regime, which can be seen in the dramatic murals around the city.
