Lake Nicargua is Central America's largest lake. It looks much like a sea and is home to freshwater bull sharks. These are rarely seen these days as many have been hunted for Asian markets.
The lake is dotted with 400 islands, the largest of which is Ometepe, which in Nuahatl means 'between two hills'. The island was formed when the lava of two large volcanoes - Concepción (1610m) and Maderas (1394m) - merged to form an isthmus uniting both into an island. Concepción is still active with its last major eruption in 1957.
It's hot and windy on Ometepe. Although the water is a muddy grey colour the lake is like a warm bath. Life is slow here and even the cows stroll along the beach at a leisurely pace. There's not a lot to do apart from lie in a breezy hammock and relax. Perfect.
