Emma Gorge, The Kimberley, Australia

I'm woken up by the lark's pretty song at first light. I don't mind as it's haunting and beautiful. We leave straight after breakfast to drive the 54 kilometres out of Bungle Bungle National Park and back onto the rough Gibb River Road. Our destination is El Questro Wilderness Park, a large cattle station surrounded by the dramatic Cockburn Ranges. After a brief stop at the resort lodge, where we're all thrilled by the flushing toilets, we head off for out first hike, to Emma Gorge.

Emma Gorge, named after one of the daughters of the owner, is an hour's walk crossing rugged ground and rivers. The walk leads to the beautiful 65-metre droplet falls which plunge into an emerald pool.
