I'm woken up by a swarm of noisy cockatoos and can't get back to sleep. It's almost 5.30am anyway, first light. Shortly afterwards we begin our 7 kilometre walk to Manning Gorge. 10 minutes in and we need to remove our hiking boots to wade across thigh-deep water.
