Mary River, Kakadu, Australia

There are crocodiles all over the banks especially in sunny spots. I lose count of how many I see. This is my favourite. A four metre beast with an intimidating demeanour, although I know he'll most likely retreat if we get any closer.

Saltwater crocodiles are unfairly maligned. Although they are fiercely territorial they'll usually only attack if they feel their area is being threatened. Compared to an average of one or two crocodile deaths a year in Australia, usually swimmers who ignore the warning signs, more than 2000 people are killed in road accidents.
