Bungle Bungles, Australia

The Bungle Bungles was shockingly only discovered in the 1980s. It's now a national park covering 3000 square kilometres and in 2003 was added to the World Heritage list.

The Aboriginal name Purnululu means 'sandstone' but there's some dispute as to where the name 'Bungle Bungle' originated. Some believe it's a misspelling of 'bundle bundle', the sharp spinifex grass covering the area. Others think it was named after a botched or 'bundled' attempt at establishing a cattle farm here. Either way, it's stunning.
