Devils Marbles, Australia

As we continue up the Stuart Highway it becomes hotter and the vegetation becomes more lush as we enter the Tropics.

Just north of Wycliffe Well, strewn by the side of the road over a large area are the Devils Marbles, or Karlu Karlu as they're known by Aboringines. These egg-like boulders of granite are believed to be the remains of molten lava that bubbled up to the surface of the earth. Over millions of years the boulders have eroded leaving cracked and smooth boulders. The Aborigines have a much more interesting interpretation. They believe the boulders were the eggs of the Rainbow Serpent.
