I'm expecting great things of San Cristóbal de las Casas. Everyone I've spoken to (well two people to be truthful) have said it's one of their favourites cities. Still you don't give out accolades like unless something is really impressive.
The five-hour bus ride from Palenque to San Cristóbal through the lush Chiapas mountains is breathtaking. It's the first time I've paid attention to the views for a long time. With cobble-stoned streets, painted houses and bordering green hills, the city does not disappoint either. It reminds me a little of Antigua (Guatemala), Granada (Nicaragua) and Sucre (Bolivia), and all the other colonial cities I loved.
