Playa del Carmen, Mexico

Playa del Carmen, or 'Playa' for short is centred around a tourist strip of mainly upmarket restaurants, bars and boutiques a block from the beach. An hour south of Cancun it's full of Americans taking time out to lie on the beach or shop. The Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza are only three hours away which is another lure.

Playa has grown from a population of 5000 to 160,000 in 25 years and in 1982 was the fastest growing city in the world for three years running. Walking down the main drag (American) English is the main language I hear.
