Back in town I head off to the pharmacy as I think I have developed an ear infection. The chemist isn't able to offer anything but painkillers so I'm forced to go to the hospital and wait in Casualty. I would have done anything not to spend my Saturday evening in the hospital but I'm leaving for the Outback early tomorrow morning and may not encounter a doctor for another two weeks. I'll be scuba diving after that so I don't want to take the risk.
In the hours I wait to see someone I have an inordinate amount of time to people watch. The lobby is full of barefooted Aborigines drifting in and out and on first name terms with the staff. They all know each other too. It's an unofficial meeting place. The security guard asks one if they're waiting to see a doctor. There's no response so she asks them to leave. I have the impression they just like sitting here.
At 11pm I'm finally seen by a doctor and given antibiotics for Swimmer's Ear, even though I haven't been swimming. It's not been a great day having also lost my lens hood and broken my storage device.
