There isn't a lot to do in Alice Springs. It's also quite hot so I don't really fancy the long walk to the Desert Gardens which are reputedly fantastic. I feel as if I've seen enough desert for a while. Apart from a few historic buildings the only thing that catches my eye is the Reptile Centre. Having had a morbid fascination of snakes as long as I can remember (I learnt in Central America that my Mayan sign is a snake) I head off to see the live show.
I'm quite happy to handle the skinks and lizards but when the Olive Python is offered to me I hesitate. Ollie is 3.5 metres long and weighs 30 kilos but has apparently never bitten anyone so I agree. Ollie is rather lively and I struggle to keep him from winding loops around me. Although it doesn't show, I'm petrified.
