For the last hour of the crossing the ferry enters the misty Marlborough Sounds, a series of waterways on the pine-covered coastline of the South Island. It's wild and bleak, and reminds me of the Navimag journey through the Chilean Fjords, except the water here is turquoise in spite of the grey skies. I spend an hour on deck in the rain trying to capture its beauty and isolation on camera.
