I have a choice of walking to Lake Matheson, the famous postcard mirror lake or taking a helicopter scenic flight over the glacier. I ask the bus driver what he thinks. He says there are mirror lakes everywhere in New Zealand. It's a no-brainer as far as he's concerned.
So I hand over my 120 New Zealand dollars and climb on to the helicopter with a sobbing girl who's afraid of flying and is thus wedged in between me and another girl.
The Fox, like the Franz Josef, is spectacular, flowing from the mountains into a dry lake bed. Higher up are pristine ice seracs and deep crevasses breaking up the vast snow fields. I could be in Antarctica.
