Franz Josef Glacier, New Zealand

On arriving into the small township of Franz Josef, famous for its glacier, I see if it's possible to do a Heli-Hike. This is where you fly in a helicopter to the top of the glacier and see the more pristine areas. It's been grey and overcast so it's touch and go whether we can fly. It's all on apparently so I dress from head to toe in waterproofs and await my pick up. Five minutes later the weather has turned so it's called off. Disappointing.

Instead I take the shuttle bus to the glacier car park. From here it's a good 45 minute walk over rocks and across rivers to reach the terminal face. The first glimpse is breathtaking.
