Tongariro Crossing, New Zealand

Having arrived in New Zealand in the dead of winter, it's completely the wrong time of year to hike any of the major tracks. Most of the ones I was interested in (Milford, Routeburn etc.) cross high mountain passes which are under heavy snow.

The Tongariro Crossing is part of the Tongariro Northern Circuit and is promoted as 'New Zealand's best one day walk'. I have spent a fair bit of time tying to find a guided tour still running in winter and it's touch and go. The weather has been so bad most tour companies have stopped running the walks. I finally find one who is and called yesterday for the weather report to see if they're still going. They are. Today is forecast as fine but windy with snow showers.
