Another bad night as the hostel I chose was cold and noisy. The Magic Bus is late so when I call them 15 minutes after I'm due to be picked up they say they are waiting for me on the corner. When I catch up with the bus the driver says he had me down for pick up tomorrow. What tosh.
The weather is crazy. One moment the skies are black and it's thundering down with rain. A few minutes later the clouds have passed over and the sun has surfaced. Two minutes later, driving rain again. Most of the way to Waitomo is horizontal rain. I hear the South Island has had snow storms.
I get off the bus in Waitomo, which means 'water hole or shaft' in Maori, as I was attracted by a flier highlighting a trip to the 'Lost World'. The landscape here is karst, and full of holes where the ground is literally collapsing, forming caves. There are 300 caves in the area and 40 kilometres of cave systems.
